The little girls, boys understand Good Charlotte

Punk rock is historically a genre dominated both onstage and in the crowd by tough, angry young men. Yet on Saturday at the Avalon, Good Charlotte's brand of pop-punk was enjoyed by both young girls and boys, and even by some of their parents.

While the thought of a "punk" band playing for such an audience might make Sid Vicious puke in his grave, Good Charlotte has ridden its broad appeal into the top 10 with two of its three albums. Unlike some of the acts that inspired it, the East Coast quintet played it relatively safe Saturday, lacking the anything-goes factor of their forefathers. Sure, singer Joel Madden ventured into the crowd to sing a song, but he did so with four beefy bouncers in close proximity in case anything got out of hand.

It might have lacked any sense of danger, but Good Charlotte did display plenty of energy during its 75-minute set, performing songs filled with teen angst that offered comfort to young fans as they travel the often-bumpy road from childhood to adulthood.

Adding to its girl appeal is the fact that the band is fronted by identical twin pinup boys, Joel and Benji Madden; the former has appeared on the cover of Teen People with his longtime girlfriend, Hilary Duff. Ironically, the relationship has put Madden in the tabloids next to some of the empty-headed celebutantes the band rails against in its best songs, such as the bouncy anti-golddigger anthem "Girls & Boys" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

The band performed both of those hits Saturday as the crowd shouted, sang and bounced along, as well as the comforting power ballad "Hold On" and the life-affirming "I Just Wanna Live." Aside from wheeling out the hits, it also previewed songs from its fourth album, which is not due until next year. Most notable was "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl," a song (previewed on the band's Web site) that the Madden twins claim was inspired by their mother. The electronic-based dance number, which sounds like goof-rockers the Bloodhound Gang minus the sense of humor, hints at an interesting new direction for Good Charlotte.

Openers the Pink Spiders showed plenty of potential in a 30-minute set. The Nashville-based trio, augmented by the unfortunately named second guitarist Dick Competition, came off like the missing link between Blink-182 and Cheap Trick. The band might be supporting its major-label debut, "Teenage Graffiti," but they already perform like seasoned pros. Don't be surprised if you see them crawling up the charts sometime soon.
