Это новое правило. Суть его я пропустил, но связано оно с тем, что они уже встречались при круговой системе.

MURPHY TARGETS WORLD NO 1 SLOT
04 Feb 2007 21:02:00

Shaun Murphy has set his sights on getting to the top of the rankings having won the Malta Cup.

With a 9-4 defeat of Ryan Day in Portomaso tonight, Rotherham’s Murphy won his first ranking title since his World Championship success in 2005.

That result puts Murphy up to fifth in the provisional rankings and he is aiming for the very top.

"To be world No 1 would be better than being World Champion, it’s my ultimate goal," said the 24-year-old.

"When I get home I will sit down and work out what I need to do to get there. I won’t be aiming for No 2."

Murphy was delighted to regain the feeling of silverware in his hands. "It may only be 20 months since I won the world title but I was beginning to feel the monkey on my back and that was getting tiresome," he added.

"I have shown people that I am not a flash in the pan and I am a winner of tournaments - plural. When we get to the next event and I look in the programme it will say I’ve won two ranking titles, not one.

"When I won at the Crucible there was a lot of expectation that came with it, suddenly I was among the favourites for every tournament. It has taken me a while to repeat that success and when you have experienced the highs of winning, it’s hard to accept mediocrity.

"In some way this means more to me than winning the world title because I have worked so hard for it. I’ve been in the gym here every day after breakfast, running three to five kilometres, then going for a swim.

"To reap the rewards is very satisfying. We will be giving some of the money I’ve won to the Church and some to people in Zimbabwe who need it more than we do. But I will be getting a new pair of trainers because I think I’ve worn mine out this week!"

As for the match, Murphy added: "Neither of us played well in the first session, we were both quite nervous. I knew it wasn’t over at 6-1 and when he came back a bit towards the end, there was some sense of desperation to get over the winning line. But you have to just hold fast and wait for your chance."

Welshman Day, playing in his first ranking final, said: "I was disappointed by the way I played in the first session.

"I had chances in virtually every frame. In the second I got a massive kick on the green when I could have gone 1-1 and that unsettled me for a couple of frames, then 4-0 down was not what I wanted.

"At 6-1 I still felt I was in the match and I played better in the second session. if I could have nicked the last frame and got to 8-5 Shaun would have been under pressure.

"I’ve had a good week and won some good matches. It’s only a week now until the Welsh Open in Newport which is my home tournament and that’s one that I always look forward to."
